So Many Things

So many things have happened within the last month. Julia turned 5! We finished the year at her daycare before she heads off to kindergarten tomorrow. And finally, today my B turns 3. The B is three!!!

He's so excited to be three. We pulled out the toddler bed for him this morning and I'll paint his room this weekend and decorate it for him. Up to this point it had been green and blue with farm animals, quite the nursery.

Things are happening so fast that it really has taken me by surprise. I knew that this was all coming but it's still hard to believe that we're here and starting the elementary school years with one child and the other is daily evolving into his own dynamic little wild thing and big boy self.

We just spent a week at "the seaside" with Grammy and Grandad. It was really wonderful and none of us wanted to come home. We had a great time swimming, making sand castles, catching crabs at night, roasting marshmallows, body surfing, and Julia and Brendan loved swimming in the ocean on their own for the first time and putting their heads under water. It was just nice to be all together.

This is what tired children look like after playing in the surf. One stays in the bed, the other somehow ended up halfway underneath, yet still totally out.

Brendan's First Movie

Despite what I told them, that the movie was really "Kung Fu Squirrel" they were up for a movie. It was Brendan's first time at the movies. At one point he needed to be removed from the theatre, kicking and screaming...so loudly that everyone in the theatre could hear he and Andy as they walked down the large stairway and outside. Several people were laughing and I heard one man laugh and say "he's still going!" as the sound of Brendan's displeasure went away from us.

At the end it was a success, nothing that popcorn and sprite (Brendan's first) couldn't fix. He kept sipping it and whispering to Andy "it's weird" with a smile on his face.

Dutch Wonderland

We had a great time yesterday at Dutch Wonderland. In the middle of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the park is made especially for littler kids. Probably the most amazing part of it was that just across a small stream was a large farm run by the Amish. It seemed strange to me that they live this simple life right next door to an amusement park. But we all have to live somewhere and their land was so beautiful.

Catching Up

It's been a busy few weeks here. Last week Julia was sick with her usual and prior to that we celebrated Father's Day and various birthdays. Canoe photos are from a fun Father's Day.

Julia graduated from Pre-K after a great 15 months with the wonderful Miss Jessica and Miss Mina. She's grown so much this past year and learned so much with a wonderful teacher and a great program. At graduation the children told us what they wanted to be when they grow up. For the longest time Julia has wanted to be a mommy, then when Miss Jessica became pregnant, Julia wanted to be a mommy and a teacher. So, we were all a bit surprised when at graduation she announced that she wants to be a pilot. We did a bit of talking about how she can be a mommy, teacher and a pilot.

Julia and Brendan both showed me "babies in the belly" after seeing a few too many Jon & Kate + 8. Brendan looooves to see her big belly full of babies. Julia had 100 babies in her belly and Brendan had 2, or so they said.

Strawberry The Snapping Turtle

I was sick this week. Sick in the bed, not moving, not reading, not watching TV, just sick. Somehow I got to the doctor's office, then fell asleep in the waiting room. Truly. The nurse apologized for waking me. It was all the energy I could muster to get there.

Wednesday night we had a pretty wicked storm. With overhead power lines I'm amazed that we didn't lose power for more than about a minute. We always lose power and when we do we then watch our neighbors across the street slowly power up their generator, while we do our best not to burn our place down with candles. Then sooner or later life is restored and I stop talking about getting a generator.

So, Wednesday afternoon during the storm we lost power briefly but I didn't care. I was in bed, pretty out of it and glad that the kids school is in the basement of a large church. So, they were safe I assumed and they were.

So much rain Wednesday afternoon and then overnight caused a lot of problems around here but the one that affected me most was when I was awoken Thursday morning at 7 by Andy who burst into the room and said "You've got to see this." Then went to get Julia. She and I were both grumpy but I was grumpy on top of feeling awful still. Either way I knew that if Andy was waking me it was going to be good.

We aren't quite sure if it was the craziness of the storm or time of year, but as Andy was walking down the driveway to get the paper he noticed something big and shiny in our yard 'o weeds. Not a wet stick, not a cluster of wet branches. No, a snapping turtle who had apparently somehow made it way up from the lake to our house, oh, about 7 to 9 feet from our front door.

We looked at it, we talked to it, we kept a reasonable distance from it.

As the kids got ready to go to school they would periodically give me updates that it was moving, that it was digging. It seems that it possibly laid eggs in our yard. This idea was from watching it and reading about snappers in our region, that this is the time of year, the proximity from the water is right and the article mentioned that turtles like to lay them high above the lake so that if there are actually hatchlings, they only have to go downhill to make it to the water source. So we might have snapping turtle eggs in our yard.

Brendan liked seeing it and kept a good distance. Both kids were sad to come home and find that it was no longer here.

I was worried that it would try to cross the street and get hit by a car, so long story short, our neighbor across the street ended up picking it up by the tail and walked it down through his yard back to the lake where it happily swam off.

Oh, and Julia named her "Strawberry."

The Weekend

Julia and Big Bear after a long, tiring day. Brendan's cars all lined up.
